Memories of Key Lay on Capitol Hill

Back in the late 70′s when I was a legislative assistant to US Senator Richard Stone of Florida, Ken Lay was the chief lobbyist for Florida Power and Light– the major utility company in Florida. He was constantly in our office and was very pleasant. Years later when Enron came into positive focus as a “hot” company for investors and I saw that Ken Lay was the Chairman of Enron it was hard to believe that he had come so far. Never had any contact with him after Capitol Hill, but I remember him as smart and creative. Perhaps he was too creative!

Ken Lay was a crook. It is inconcievable that he had no knowledge of what was going on and surely was deeply involved either in creating the schemes or reaping the results and raping the employees and investors. Crimes like these, with tens or hundreds of thousands of victims should be classified as capital crimes and those convicted should be punished in accord with capital statutes. If Ken Lay is really dead that’s good enough. If he’s off hiding in another country, then he’ll have the last laugh. The judge that let him come to Aspen twice, after conviction, should be recalled.
