Aspen Generous? Well, Not Really

I would like to object, if I may, to the word “generously” as used in yesterday’s Aspen Daily News column titled, “Aspen gives generously to political causes.”

The article stated that Aspen residents within the 81611 area code donated $274,000 to various political candidates and organizations in 2006. This is akin to me, who boasts a net worth of approximately $237, donating six cents. It’s completely insignificant when compared to the wealth that exists within city limits.

Though the number may seem large at first glance, it pales in comparison to other big money towns.

In a blog titled “Second Home Owner’s Like to Give It Up” Michael Conniff pointed out that Beverly Hills has donated $2.5 million. Granted, Beverly Hills has a larger population, 34,941 pampered souls according to a 2003 estimate. Aspen has 5,914 residents, a mere 16.93 percent of Beverly Hills population. To put the towns on an even playing field, simply divide Beverly Hills population (34,941) by Aspen’s (5,914), which gives you a multiple of 5.91. Now multiply $274,000 by 5.91 and you get $1.6 million.

Sorry Aspen, not even close.

If you add zip code 81612, Aspen’s total donations grow to $432,680. Jackson, Wyoming, donated $511,421. Palm Beach, Florida, population 10,468, donates so much money the website can’t even calculate a total. Now that’s generous.

By don’t fret, Aspen. Telluride only donated a measly $37,735. Those poor bastards obviously know nothing about swaying political favor. That and $1.79 will get them a cup of coffee.

  1. The word “generously” bothered me too. Says who? Sounded like it came directly from a press release.
