MP3 Players, Job Update, Relentless Rain

First, props to Michael Conniff on writing “tighty righty.” That was funny. See the Karl Rove review.

MP3 players — I am in the market. Trying to decide between a few different major brands, i.e., iPod, iriver, and Creative (and I did look up which was the correct way to capitalize which letters for the brands). My sister just got a Creative 1 GB player. It is the size of a matchbox. I am going to borrow it for a few days and see how I like it. A part of me just wants to buy a cheap one knowing it will break in a year and then by that time all the fanciest technology today will be standard and cheaper. If I can just wait. That was my same theory with laptops…have patience they are only getting cheaper and cheaper. I finally purchased one when all the features I wanted came on about a $900 machine. Not that my wallet didn’t cough up that amount, but it’s much better than say $2,000. However, the full warranty never got cheaper. Still in the $400 range. It’s not a matter of if I will drop it or spill coffee on it; it’s a matter of when.

Paste Magazine — just bought the latest issue today. Can’t wait to read it. A wonderful mag I highly recommend. Offers reviews on contemporary music, film, and literature. Published in Atlanta.

Job update — If you happen to read my blog in which I mentioned resigning, well, that’s true. However, about a week later a position at KSPN opened up that I was quite interested in and had actually rallied for the creation of this position before resigning. I interviewed and started last Monday. I am new Program Director at KSPN. Couldn’t be more excited. We have had a regional p.d. for the past two years, based in Breckenridge, and now we have an in-house p.d. as well. Looking forward to working on programming related projects and making KSPN even better than it already is.

Weather — If I wanted to live in Seattle I would. What’s up with the non-stop rain in Aspen the past week? I know it is much needed precipitation, but it’s been relentless. It’s funny…during the week I know the date, the weather report, the latest headlines and what’s happening around town…sometimes on the weekend, when I don’t have to do an air shift on the radio, I get really out of it. I hesitate when asked the date. I don’t know the weather forecast five days out and can’t regurgitate it on command like I can Monday through Friday.

I’ll get back with you on the MP3 player. I have been on pcmagazine.com, pcworld.com, and other random sites with product reviews. Trying weed through the crappy products and just figure out what my preference is between the good products and their options.

  1. Thanks for the props, Sara G.

As for the MP3 dilemma, here’s my observation: as the owner of (one) iPod and (one) non-iPod I’m all about the iPod because it is part of the integrated iTunes, iMusic platform.

This purchase is not about the hardware–it’s about what happens end-to-end.

But bless you child, for (not) asking.

Big congrats to you, Sara G., P.D.! Lately I have found myself reading Aspen Post before sending any emails. I learned that it saves me from writing the emails, when I can post it here. Consider this my email to you that has been owed.

Take Michael’s advice and go with the iPod. I bought one of the cheapest versions of an MP3 player which holds only 128 songs. Why? I need it when I pay visits to Scott Alter, my dentist. Listening to Clapton gets me through anything. Also, I can’t stand things jammed uncomfortably into my ears for very long, even if they are covered with a soft, spongy material disguised as cushioning.

For long hauls, I just installed Sirius satellite radio. I know XM is the preferred rendition, but XM doesn’t have Radio Margaritaville. Which leads me to my last comment and suggestion to the new PD of KSPN. A full hour of uninterrupted Jimmy Buffett every day of the week.
