The Buffs Almost Win

The winless Colorado Buffalos (0-4) were a mere 46 seconds away from upsetting the #9 Georgia Bulldogs when Georgia’s Freshman quarterback, Joe Cox, connected with tight-end Martrez Milner for a twenty-yard game tying touchdown. Brando Coutu’s extra point sealed Colorado’s fate, as the Bulldogs narrowly avoided a stunning upset with a 14-13 victory.

Cox replaced an unproductive Mathew Stafford late in the third quarter. At that point, the Bulldogs trailed 13 -0.

“You think about in situations like that you might be nervous,” Cox said, “but that was the most comfortable I’ve been. I was out there laughing and having a good time.”

Cox may have found the situation funny, but the Buffs aren’t laughing. Some are saying that the game was a moral victory for the struggling Colorado program, and perhaps it was, but it doesn’t change the fact that the Buffaloes have lost eight straight, Colorado’s longest losing streak in 42 years.

Those waiting anxiously for the Buffaloes first win may have to be patient. Next week Colorado travels to Columbia to take on the undefeated Missouri Tigers (4 – 0). On October 7 the Buff’s odds improve when they host the Baylor Bears (1-3), but a win over the lowly Bears, a given in year’s past, is something you can no longer bet the farm on. The second half of the season holds little promise for a turnaround, as the Buffs face Oklahoma, Kansas State and Nebraska.

I’d like to say things could be worse for the Buff’s, but the fact is, they couldn’t.

On An Encouraging Note:
ESPN’s College Game Day exposé on Buffalo mascot “Ralphie” gave Colorado its first positive media exposure of the season. Ralphie, a 9-year old female bison, made the journey from Boulder to Athens, the first time since 1978 that Colorado’s mascot has traveled to an away game. This Ralphie, the forth bison to hold the mascot title, was donated by media tycoon and organic rancher Ted Turner. Were this lucky bison not chosen as the Buff’s mascot, its likely she woul have been served up in patty form at Ted’s Montana Grille, Turner’s restaurant chain specializing in bison burgers.
