Open Minded Aspenites?

With regard to the letters to the editor at the Daily being written in response to Rick Magnuson’s art piece, “Hole”.. why are people so up in arms?  This is the 2000’s!  Masturbation is something that most people do on a regular basis.

“In one recent national study, 95 percent of men and 89 percent of women reported having masturbated” (taken from http://www.vpul.upenn.edu/ohe/library/Sexhealth/articles/masturbating.htm)

Rick Magnuson made this art piece over a year ago.  It was not hidden from the public, in fact, it was displayed on regional television, for anyone to see if they so desired.  Of course anything from your past can, and probably will be, bought out in the open once you are running for office, and it was to be expected that this would be bought in to the open. But of course it would take the bias journalists to distort and twist media reports in the hope to discredit Rick.

Take Bill Clinton for example.. “I did not have sexual relations with that woman” Oh, yes he did.  Caught in a lie, yet people got over that and Billy Boy is still thought of highly in this country.  So why the big uproar about a guy expressing himself through his art?  He didn’t cheat on his wife and lie to an entire nation.

Art is in the eye of the beholder.. why not be open minded to the concept of Hole?  Rick was ALONE in the desert, 40 yrs old – a milestone year – wanting a family, but not with anyone to start one, “sowed his seed” in mother earth as an expression of the way he was feeling at that time in his life.  If you would open your minds and look past what you see on the surface – and see the message behind the art. That is what makes good art – to evoke thought.

I don’t think that Rick is a pervert, as he was labeled by one person in the community, letter to the Editor, Aspen Daily News 10/25/06.

The dictionary meaning of PervertOne whose sexual behavior differs from the accepted norm.
What is the accepted norm? Everyone has different levels of sexual openness. 95 percent of males think masturbating is normal….

Art is freedom of expression.. a First Amendment right. Look past the art issues – look at the political issues, and make an informed decision.

Open minded Aspenites…?  hmm

I watch grassroots all the time – and had never seen or heard about the movie rick made showing him masturbating, nor do I care to see it, especially now. none i talked to has seen it either. looks like he’s milking it for all it’s worth now as he should. he’s brought up some great points and has some outstanding ideas for our sheriffs dept, but his efforts would be better directed at being a deputy.

another thing is he’s embarrased the apd. you should hear all the jokes about him going around town. evey time i see a police car now in town, i just shake my head. he really hasn’t done the inter relations situation of the apd/sheriff any favors either. if i was loren ryerson i’d grab the guy by the hair and drag him into my office and give him a wake up call. now he’s on the cover of the paper being interviewed on tv about his art piece? what a joke. the guy’s just a marginal public safety oficer who has questionable people skills from what I’ve experienced personally. i’m sure he’s a swell guy and all, but right now he’s hanging himself, and it looks like he’s got plenty more rope where that came from.

aspenites are open minded. our town loves a freak. this guy is a little too out there for the position he’s running for. maybee if this was 1970 he’d have a better chance. he a little past his time, and whether he knows it or not, a bit like hunter s thompson – the very person he despises.

he’s brought some fresh perspectives that we could all benefit from, but he’s not going to win the election, not even close.

this is way better than comedyfest.

I don’t understand why Magnuson dug a hole in the desert in the name of art, to me he seems emotionally disturbed.
If this was the one and only time he used masturbation as a form af art I might be able to get it. I don’t believe it is folks….Rick has repeatedly used masturbation as an art form. There is another film “Blow Me” . and another art project that involves “masturbating in belly buttons ” see how it becomes disturbing?????Since Rick has no problem supposedly running a truthful campaign, I think the community would like to know if this is some kind of emotional disturbance. I know some of you would like to let it go. But once is not enough for this guy.

Unfortunately, as sincere as Rick Magnuson may be about hoping to be sheriff, his campaign has turned into a joke now, and very understandably so. The seriousness of his intended focus on the issues have been overshadowed by his personal expressions of art and his interpretation of it.

Setting aside all of the jokes, my biggest concern as a voter is expecting to elect someone with law enforcement experience. By that, I mean I want someoen who has worked in all the capacities of a Colorado POST certified (Police Officer Standards and Training), has successfully attended and completed the extensive training and time to become a police officer, knowing the law, and having street experience. The duties Magnuson has carried out in his 10 year employment with APD does not fall under the category of a certified police officer.

What it all boils down to is very simple. I wouldn’t want someone who has brushed his teeth diligently all his life, never having one cavity, performing dental work on me if he isn’t a doctor of dentistry. Likewise, I don’t want someone without cop experience being placed in the highest law enforcement position in the county.

Speaking of POST Qualifications. I did a little Google search of the Colorado POST Manual. One of the sections titled Law Enforcement Code of Ethics caught my eye. Here is an exerpt:

“I will never act officiously or permit personal feelings, prejudices, animosities, or friendships to influence my decisions. With no compromise for crime and relentless prosecution of criminals, I will enforce the law courteously and appropriately without fear or favor, malice or ill will, never employing unneccesary force of violence and never accepting gratuities.”

If you actually read the POST Manual in regards to requirements of a Sheriff, it says nothing about being required to have a POST Certification prior to being elected Sheriff, it merely says that upon taking office, a Sheriff must complete an 80 hour Sheriff’s training course and within 1 year, obtain a POST certification.

Interestingly enough, it also says that every Sheriff must complete at least 20 hours of in-service training provided by the county sheriffs of Colorado, inc or face the suspension of his or her pay.

The only reason his campaign is becoming a ‘joke’ is due to your continued comments about unrelated art. Who cares…I ask myself that. Who cares? How did this get away from the issues at hand? No deputies in the school, drugs all over the county and rarely stopped, death’s up and down Hwy 82 and 133 from DUI.

But no, let’s do this Aspen style and destroy a man because he jerked off. You are all showing your shallow and hypocritical selves. This entire story was purposefully ‘broken’ by the paper to help Bob win the election because they knew you people would react like this. Go ahead, elect your Sheriff Bob and you will see that much will not change, he is afraid of change as are you. The continued lax enforcement towards drugs and DUI will keep on truckin’. And I am not even going to get into all the other stats Magnuson has posted…

I am focusing on the simple things…keeping drunk drivers off the streets I drive my kids on and keeping drugs out of this county that my kids play and grow in. Simple stuff that takes basic law enforcement. I still am waiting for Bob to respond about those issues. Other than that, all of the continued drivel about desert masturbation should be stopped so the people that live here can get to the real stuff, you know…life and death type issues! Why are we as voters hurting ourselves by focusing on such a ridiculous thing? I do not understand it.

much_adu, you ask who cares? Obviously the people who have written their opinions on the matter. As for shallow, just suppose by some miraculous event, Rick wins this election. How long do you think it will take the ‘shallow’ big bucks TV hosts and comedians to hone in on Aspen’s new sheriff? I can already hear Leno, Letterman, Stewart, and others making it the top story in their monologues. Saturday Night Live will have skits on it every other week.

Did you happen to read this bit of news? “Judge James Boyd reduced Sanchez-Ceja’s bail from $750,000 to $100,000, agreeing with defense attorney Mark Rubenstein that the initial bail amount was too high.” Fingers are quick to point at Sheriff Braudis in regards to this defendent’s previous drug bust, how he managed to be let loose the first time on reduced charges, deported, and found his way back to Aspen three months later to continue his criminal ways. He was busted again. Who is to blame for this guy walking out again with a slap on the hand? Not Bob Braudis.

Win or lose, RIck Magnuson will still be a topic of discussion, both in serious topics as well as his definition of art, which he is entitled to. He may still win awards in self-expressive art. But his main claim to fame may rest in the hands of Leno and Letterman, even before the election takes place. Stay tuned.

I asked rhetorically, not expecting you to answer, seeing as I do not care about Magnuson gathering fame or imfamy from the papers. My point is that I care about a Sheriff in this county doing his job, which Braudis may be a wee bit slacking in. Is Bob a bad guy…no i don’t think so. Has been in office too long? Yes. We as voters should never have taken out term limits. It has given us a Sheriff that is personable and well thought of amongst some and hated amongst others, but mostly it has stifled any opportunity for growth or change. His ideals have not changed in twenty years. That is long time to go without adjustment. As to the big bucks tv hosts…again I ask why is this important? This election should be about the right choices for the right reasons, not a charade. If you truly feel Bob is the best candidate then vote for him. On the other hand, if you feel that Bob has been a great Sheriff, but has run his course…then Rick is the other option. Both candidates are similar in many ways, but one has just a few more ideas that will increase the overall safety of our community. I feel that person is Magnuson.

With regard to the Sheriff’s approach to drug enforcement.. why are people so up in arms? This is the 2000’s! Drugs are something that most people do on a regular basis.

    Whee! Turnabout is fair play.

Seriously, you’ll are some depraived sickos. If you can’t see anything newsworhty about a candidiate running on a children’s role model platform who makes films of himself wanking into a hole…. God save us from partisans.

Several national news stations seem to find it newsworthy too. But, they are all of course on the secret Braudis bias agenda too, eh aplha?

Keep pumping the wanker spin folks, every time you rage out people for arching their eyebrows at wanker films, you lose another vote.

So why sow your wrath on me Chief? I didn’t even comment on this blog. But seeing as you can’t smoke the ole peace pipe, (which I find ironic since you seem to advocate smoking everything else) I guess I will comment on the matter.

Please provide some type of evidence, link, or something to back up your statement of “This is the 2000’s! Drugs are something that most people do on a regular basis.” I doubt if you can. At least Miss Lissa linked her source.

And there is no “secret” agenda. The Aspen Daily News is bias, and has an agenda to skew the issues in favor of Braudis. Anyone, even an old cretin like you can see that. And the Aspen Daily News makes no bones about the fact that they are bias for Bob. So I don’t get where you come up with this stuff.

Once again you have decided to disregard the issues of the race and since your hero has no standing on the issues you have to focus on anything but the topics.

That’s all for now, it’s late. Be safe. Wouldn’t want anything to happen to my favorite cigar store Indian.

I haven’t “complained” about the ADN. I have pointed out its obvious bias in an attempt to hold them accountable as other bloggers here have done. Not sure if that last post was directed at me or not. Just so you know “Jihad” is literally translated as “inner struggle” or “striving.” It is also used, though not translated as such to define a “holy struggle” or “holy war” under the Koran.

Unless there are some Muslims on this post that I don’t know about, I doubt very seriously there is a “Jihad against Braudis.”

I have liked most of your posts to date, don’t go down the road that would lead people to believe that the lost sailor is from the ship of fools.
