The City Within the City

Today I was bombarded with text messages and phone messages from family and friends telling me about the 3 feet of snow that was received in the Rocky Mountains. I internally laughed as I watched people in D.C. wrap themselves in wool coats and gloves while the temperatures were in the 50′s with a light wind. I myself happily worked up a sweat while walking to work this morning with no coat.

The way my work day is currently going it is a strong possibility that I will see sunrise and roll into another work day. As my southern friends would say “it’s all good”. In fact today has given me a new found respect on how the “system” works. I now understand the Homeland Security Threat Level codes and completely understand why we are at an elevated level of “orange”. I also understand and have much more respect on how a national operation works…think of it as a city within a city-that include lots of GPS…and I understand that why sometimes in the past I personally have been frustrated with the “system” it is good to know that the “system” is always working in one way or another. As one of my favorite moments of the day occured when on the multi plasma office television set that was running numerous news and weather information a news scroll popped up and stated “Federal Judge rules in favor of Hurricane Katrina victims that seek compensation for flood damage from insurance companies”. With that one scroll a collective smile came across the room and a few quiet shouts of “Yes” were stated while some clapped hands. It was a moment shared by workers who had been there, seen it and dealt with it and remember the faces of those we served. The sun will be up soon and another day will begin in the “City within the City”.
