Daily’s Wingman Gets His Shot

ASPEN, COLORADO (Post Time News)–The longtime wingman at the Aspen Daily News is now numero uno.

Troy Hooper, the intrepid and controversial reporter, ascended into independent journalism today when word seeped out of the Daily that he would indeed succeed outbound editor Rick Caroll, who ankled the paper in favor of the #2 managing editor position at the rival Aspen Times.

Hooper is a longtime reporter and associate editor at the paper who actually resigned, albeit briefly, to resume a freelance career that included a steady diet of Daily assignments. He was appointed by owner David Danforth of Santa Monica, California. Danforth once again passed on the opportunity to appoint a female editor by choosing Hooper over Managing Editor Catherine Lutz.

The Daily remains the sole independent newspaper extant from Aspen to Rifle to Vail, with the rest of the competition–including dailies in Aspen, Glenwood Springs, and Vail, and weeklies in Snowmass and Carbondale–controlled by Swift Newsapers.

I’m getting confused. Is this journalism (Post Time News) or blogarhhea? Is this a sourced story with interviews or gossipy commentary? Does Chuck need to cite his sources on the radio but not in the blogosphere?

The absence of consistent structure and standards leads me to believe that all forms of local media are essentially a free-for-all…which is quite fine by me, thank you.

Set the bar low, and we can all clear it with a modified journalistic Fosbury Flop.

  3. You go, Wharf Rat!

Nobody else seems to be confused. And where the heck have you been? We missed you. It’s not the same without you and boys neighing nay.

    Best, Michael!

Troy Hooper is super cool – and just the man for the job – I had a beer with him at Hunter’s sendoff blast. He’s got his finger on the pulse of this town. Congratulations and good luck!

Keep up the good work Troy!

ADN is still the daily paper of choice. We’re real lucky in this one horse town that we got two daily papers.

And may I boldly suggest that the Aspen Times SELL the Weekly publication again? So as local kids can sell them each Friday in town, like I used to, and my son used to, making a killing…That really taught me some valuable lessons about business at a young age – for that I am grateful to the Aspen Times – and justifyably still dissapointed that they went corporate, or whatever the reason, and discontinued that program.
