My Goodness! This summer is going by so fast! It felt a little like fall this morning when I arose, but that is impossible because I haven’t had the summer bounty of tomatoes, cucumbers and melons in my belly yet!
Mother Nature is eeking it out this year. Those tomatoes still aren’t ready…
In our box this week we will have Mesclun, Arugula, Garlic, Summer Squash, Peaches, Corn, Cucumbers, Kale or Chard, Parsley and Green Beans.
Oogie from Desert Weyr wanted me to let you know she has some nice smaller Lamb legs. They are about 3 # each. Nice for dinner for two with a little left over for a sandwich the next day…..
The Leroux Creek Spa items are a huge hit with all the ladies! Don’t be shy, every product is wonderful.
The flowers are so bountiful right now. The bouquets are loaded with beautiful Sunflowers and Lillies. I am taking ideas to rename our Fresh and Wyld bouquets. The Zephyros gals sell the Flower Power and the Grande Dame at the Saturday Farmers Market but mine on the site with the same name are a little smaller and a little less money, so to avoid confusion I am renaming mine. If you help me pick the right names out you can Win! a little bouquet of your own.
Order up, we thank you for choosing Local and Farm Fresh Food for your families!

Chef Dava,
My wife and I have always enjoyed Arugula, so this year, we planted some in our kitchen garden.
I find the peppery quality of our plants remarkably different than anything we get at the grocery store. Frankly, the difference is stunning. The flavor is delicious, but because it’s got such a kick, a little bit goes a long way. Now I know why some call it “Rocket.”
My question is, is this difference between home-grown and store-bought Arugula typical?
Also, I notice that some of the larger leaves can be bitter. Can you offer any advice on how to harvest Arugula to avoid this?
Cheers,

Rocket likes to be harvested young. I think leaves don’t want to be more than 6-7 inches high, also the heat makes them more spicy, so try to harvest before it gets too late in the season.
I think the store bought Arugula must be a less spicy hybrid so as not to overwhelm most of the Americans palates.
I like Arugula with melon and prociutto, and I love a little blended with parsley and turned into a pesto, and nothing could taste better than arugula, heirloom tomatoes, garlic and Balsamic vinaigrette. Have you ever had a ham sandwich with dijon, tomato, arugula and cheddar? Yum?
Maybe Arugula is a little like Marmite and Wasabi in one regard, taste great, but spread it thin!

I like the way your mind works… Arugula with melon and prociutto? Thanks for the suggestions…
