Aspen Music Festival and School Director of Educational Outreach Debby Barnekow sums up her week-long school residency with guitarist Brad Richter.
It amazes me that last week only had 5 days because it seems like a much longer time. Though it really did fly by, each day had so many special moments in them and both Brad and I were intent on savoring everything.
Our last day, the day of the concert was spent finalizing details for the program, children’s names and going over all the stage changes to make it flow smoothly. With four groups of students, 2 of which were 10 and under in age, I wanted to be certain that each one would be able to rehearse on stage and know exactly what to do and when. Dress rehearsal could not have gone better with only a few additions (extension cord for a couple amps, etc.) to the mix. I so appreciated having Natalie DeFelice (AES), Randi Kelly and Stuart LaCroix (ACS), Jerry Gasau (BHS) and Mark Gray (RFHS) come with their students and their assistance.
Though it was a very snowy night, we had a great crowd at the concert and the students played their best. There were a few “ahhs” when the younger folks took the stage and a very warm welcome back for Brad. He has developed a following in 2 short years! After the concert, so many of the high school students were so excited and pleased with themselves, I am certain they wanted to continue playing! It is very gratifying to know that these students are proud of themselves, their accomplishments and can see clearly their potential.
