Trust but Verify
The questions about “who knew what” with the Burlingame finances remain unanswered. Fortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a shred of evidence to show that our Mayor and his fellow politicians intentionally misled the voters about the construction and development costs for this important project. Accordingly, at this point, we should take our elected officials at their word that this was simply an honest mistake. However, 80 million dollars of cost overruns in a town of six thousand people is a lot of money, even in “wonderland.”
To help clear the air on this subject, I agree with Jim Perry in his call for an independent investigation. At best, it will confirm that there was no intentional wrongdoing. President Ronald Reagan, dealing with the comrades of the former Soviet Union , said “trust but verify.” The citizens of Aspen deserve at least as much.
