Another one bites the dust—-business that is in the mid valley with Basalt Booksellers downtown planning to close up—-no word yet on what might replace the space—which was built new about five years ago—but in the current economic climate just couldn’t make it.
KUUR news is looking into a new system of law enforcement that allows anyone to determine where an offender (a felon or criminal) is living, what he or she is doing, and what other areas of interest surrounding those convicted of crimes can be made available. It’s intended say investigators, at providing up the minute information online to victims or those concerned about the criminal’s status, but could this also be used to find out more about anyone who checks in online—-your privacy? And security? Are those at risk with this system being installed in Pitkin County.
It’s called VINE—stands for Victim information and Notification everyday).

Elected leaders in Snowmass village are thinking about relaxing some of the rules related to affordable housing. The weak economy has stymied sales of the units, and the strict rules for the deed restricted digs are being studied.
But councilman Reed Lewis is opposed to bending the requirements—saying that more people from outside the area would abuse the system and acquire worker housing for their own vacation needs.
The idea will be taken up again later this month.
