Jim Laurence News Roundup

Monday June 15th, 2009

The remains of a woman in her mid to late twenties are being studied for clues as to her identity.  On Friday, parts of a body originally reported to be that of a young girl were discovered by a teenage boy working in an orchard located about five miles west of Glenwood Springs.
All investigators are saying is that the remains show multiple tattoos and very little else.  Garfield County Sheriff Lou Valario says the remains so far do not match the description of any persons missing in the county—and that the length of time that the remains have been in the orchard is unknown.
The FBI and the Colorado Bureau of Investigations is working with local law enforcement on the case.  The area of the discovered remains, near Canyon Creek, remains closed to the public.
Spraying, cutting, and now introducing hormones to stop the spread of the mountain pine beetle—are proving futile in the effort to stop the blight that is turning vast areas of the state into a rust covered vista of dead and dying trees.
Federal funds will be used to fight the spread of the beetle if state lawmakers are successful —-but environmentalists say you can’t stop this—the pine beetle will continue to devastate areas—-and could possibly hit Aspen before too long——-as chain saws are readied to remove more than 120 trees from the area near Smuggler Mountain trail overlooking the city.
The For the Forest group, spearheaded by former mayor of Aspen John Bennet, received the go ahead from aspen city council to remove dead trees to try and maintain the views…..which might be possible since there’s a wide variety of trees in the Aspen area not susceptible to the mountain pine beetle.
Some of the most severe devastation is located in the Eagle Valley and Vail, and in Summit County near Dillon.

More changes on the business scene—with John Robert’s gym at the ABC taking over the Aspen Athletic club downtown at 720 East Hyman Avenue.—–a new lease begins for the club on November first—-

Count on KUUR —TV Aspen—and our sister station KSNO radio ===for coverage this week of the goings on at the annual Food and Wine Classic!  Businesses will do well this weekend valley wide—-with the Ride the Rockies tour, Strawberry days, the beginning of Jazz Aspen Snowmass and Food and wine.¼br /> Weather is hoped of course to be sunny—but if the latest trend continues, low pressure moving in each afternoon—-the events could see cloudy skies by mid day.
