Aspen City Hall was packed for a meeting last night about the proposed makeover of the Bidwell building downtown.
The Bidwell is located at 434 E. Cooper Avenue, just across the street from Paradise Bakery, and has served as office and retail space, and a restaurant and bar among other businesses, since 1965.
Three years ago the building, which was designed by Aspen architect Fritz Benedict, was considered for historic designation—-but that was defeated narrowly by city council.
Now the plan is to increase the footprint—from 12,000 square feet to 18, 000 square feet in a construction project that would take, say planners, more than 2.5 years to complete.
That’s a big part of the challenge to getting the project approved. We’ll be detailing those issues for city leaders and developers, about this project located at what’s been described as the most prominent corner in the downtown core.
A 67 year old man from Maryland visiting Beaver Creek Ski area was taken to hospital yesterday after suffering some sort of collision (authorities are calling it a “skier incident”). Basic life support was administered but the man’s name, his current condition and the cause of the “incident” has not been released. The skier was, says the report from Vail Police, wearing a helmet at the time of the accident just before noon on Monday.
