The avalanche danger, with the new snow falling, is causing red flags across the mountain regions from Steamboat Springs all the way to the San Juans.
This winter has seen two avalanche related deaths so far. And there have been a dozen incidents involving victims of snow slides—the most recent above Lenado on Sunday when a group of four skiers were swept away just below Mount Yerkel. Only one man, a skier from Buena Vista, was injured. His legs were broken when he was pushed into a tree. A helicopter transported him to Aspen Valley Hospital late Monday afternoon.
The local economy is the main focus for governments throughout the region. In Basalt in April, three open seats on council will be filled. We’ll be tracking the candidates and the efforts in the mid-valley to get more people to visit.
That’s the same story in Snowmass Village, -which today will be celebrating Mardi Gras! Fat Tuesday—with the Big Ski Z—as celebrations are called this year, include the bead toss and lots of food at Snowmass this afternoon.
Howard Dean and Karl Rove faced off at the University of Colorado Campus in Boulder on Monday.
Two thousand people jammed Mackey Auditorium to hear the two rivals debate issues of national security and the economy, with Rove railing against national health care and government takeover of banks.
Dean, speaking calmly, showed his support for the current administration and its efforts to put things right.
The two men did agree on some points, including the idea for more small businesses to join together in order to acquire better insurance rates for their companies.
The Distinguished Speakers Board, a C.U. Student group, raised the money to pay both Rove and Dean for their speeches: $28,000 to each man.
